New Scenarios

	Solveig Gillis - Associate Lecturer in Accounting, has provided an Auditing scenario to students enrolled in Auditing & Public Practice (ACCT3101). The scenario was developed to help auditing students understand how some of the theoretical concepts of planning an audit come together in a practical sense.
	Hardy Ernst from the Biomedical Sciences School recently won a UQ Teaching and Learning Strategic Grants. His project focuses on enhancing students learning experience through mLearning (mobile learning); using VOD casts to motivate and engage students. To this end, Hardy has enlisted the help of CBIT to redesign SBLI for a mobile interface.
	Peter Adams - Associate Dean Science Faculty, has recently commissioned the development of a scenario directed at academic integrity in mathematics.
	Students at UQ studying for a Bachelor Degree in Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy/Speech Pathology had a series of three scenarios to complete as part of their first semester course, run by Venerina Johnson. Students were in groups during tutorials to work through the scenarios and had open access to refer back at anytime on-line. The third and final scenario was an individual scenario completed in a computer lab under exam conditions.

Presentations and Training Workshops

Audrey Jinks regularly gives presentations on SBLi as part of UQ�s staff development program provided by UQ�s Teaching and Educational Development Institute (TEDI). Since it is not always possible for some staff to attend these regular staff development workshops, SBLi presentations and training workshops are often organised on an as needed basis.

Sometimes SBLi presentations are provided in response to requests from specific Faculties and Schools. The latest presentation was to the School of Journalism and as a result, Anthony Frangi is interested in using SBLi to highlight some of the dangers that exist when journalists are investigating particular stories. An SBLi training workshop was also held recently, on the 8th of October. There were 6 participants - from Health & Rehabilitation Science; Population Health; Veterinary Science; Nursing & Midwifery; and two participants from the Walter Harrison Law Library, If you have missed any presentations or training workshops, would like to organise an SBLi demonstration or would like to be included on the mailing list for any future training sessions, please contact Audrey ([email protected]).

SBLi Community of Practice

We are currently planning the next SBLi Community of Practice meeting - for November/December 2010. The intention is to focus on SBLi diagnostic scenarios and to compare the approaches being used in Medicine and Veterinary Science. This meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss future developments, including the development of an i-phone version of SBLi.

New SBLi staff appointment

We welcome Bahareh Razdar to the SBLi team, replacing Enrique Marastoni – who has relocated to Melbourne. As the main SBLi programmer, Bahareh has already made valuable enhancements to question types and pre-requisite functionality. An announcement about the next SBLi release will be included in the next Newsletter.

SBLi beyond UQ

SBLi � UK Open Educational Resource

As part of an Open Educational Resource project managed by the UK Centre for BioScience, colleagues at the University of Manchester have contributed five SBLi scenarios on genetic analysis.  Throughout this series of scenarios students investigate the genetics of “Chocolate monsters” using SBLi functions to breed biotypes, analyse results and generally to provide an interactive learning module on principles of genetics. Moodle-SBLi link

Terry Stewart and colleagues at Massey Universit, New Zealand, have been working towards integrating SBLi into their Moodle environment. The functionality they have been developing includes:

• Teachers being able to select and edit an SBLi “resource”. They get a drop down box showing the scenarios they are authorized to use. Once a scenario has been selected an SBLi link is created on the page complete with icon.
• Students can click this link and a new window opens up into an SBLi scenario they are authorized to view. No login is required as Moodle knows who they are. If they are not authorized they get a message saying so.
• When a teacher clicks the link they go to a teacher’s page. From there they can view the scenario, view the logs and view the scenarios they are authorized to select.
• Teachers can hide the link from students and reveal it when they need to (and do all the other things Moodle lets you do with resource links).
• Access to the scenarios can be determined by Moodle groups the teacher might have divided the students into.

The big advantage is that students and teachers require only ONE login…to their Moodle course. Tery intends to document the method and make it available to other Moodle users after further testing.

New High School scenario

In conjunction with the SBLi team, the Brisbane School of Distance Education (BSDE) is developing a scenario for Year 3 Geography students. The scenario focuses on Studies of Society and involves the students “travelling” around the world.
