SBLi at T&L Expo

Audrey Jinks the SBLi coordinator manning the SBLi stall at a recent T&L Expo for new staff at The University of Queensland. The expo provides the opportunity to promote UQ organisational units to staff who have recently joined UQ.

New Scenarios

Brief details of some recent scenarios developed by UQ staff are given below:

Veterinary Science Colleagues in Veterinary Science have developed another 4 scenarios to add to the existing 7 vet scenarios. These scenarios have been used in the 1st semester by a class of around 200 1st year students.
Success in the BA In the Faculty of Arts, a scenario Success in the BA has been developed to provide Bachelor of Arts students with support material to help them adjust to university life in their first year. Covering issues such as university procedures, managing their time and seeking assistance, with other modules being added later in the semester, is currently being used by over 1,000 new BA students.
Academic Integrity An SBLi scenario on Academic Integrity has been developed by the Faculty of Science to provide students with information on such issues as plagiarism and other professional and ethical topics relevant to their student and professional development.
Civil Engineering In the School of Engineering, a scenario has been developed that requires Civil Engineering students to undertake and analyse a traffic speed survey. As part of the scenario they must analyse the data collated to determine the average speed and the 85th percentile speed and then prepare a report for the client, including recommendations.
Physiotherapy A new physiotherapy scenario has been developed for students at UQ studying for a Bachelor degree in Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy/Speech Pathology. Having just graduated - today is your first day at work at a general hospital. Your first roster is on the 'Medical Ward' to deal with a respiratory physiology problem.......

[email protected] Community of Practice

The SBLi team have organised two SBLi Community of Practice (CoP) meetings in the past few months. As mentioned in the last newsletter, Carl Sherwood gave a presentation at the initial meeting in December 2009, describing his approach to developing the successful series of scenarios he has developed on the teaching of statistics. At the CoP meeting in January 2010, two outside speakers gave presentations:

Terry Stewart Terry Stewart from Massey University in New Zealand provided an update on the activities of the SBLi group at Massey.
Geoff Crisp Geoff Crisp from Adelaide University talked about issues associated with assessment in the Web 2 environment.

Training & Workshops

An SBLi workshop for existing scenario developers was held on June 11th 2010. The workshop was held in a computer lab so participants could discuss projects currently being developed and work directly on those projects to make enhancements.

Feedback gained from this session has also instigated the development of a "How to Use" video. This video will be a very short 3min explanation on how to navigate through SBLi. When completed, it can be inserted into any scenario as an embedded you tube video. Please contact Audrey ([email protected]) if you would like to update your existing scenarios to incorporate this feature.
